SERA partners with MSRO to being space program to small island nations
By SERA
SERA is dedicated to using space technology to address the urgent challenges facing our planet, particularly for those on the front lines of climate change. In a recent move to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS), SERA partnered with the Maldives Space and Research Organization (MSRO) and sponsored the second edition of the Space for Island Nations Conference (SINC)
SERA Co-Founders Sam Hutchison and Joshua Skurla were invited by MSRO President Madin Maseeh to participate in the opening address of the conference to announce SIDS participation in SERA’s upcoming New Shepard Mission in which a citizen of a SIDS nation will have the opportunity to go to space on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket.

SIDS are true climate heroes, facing rising seas, extreme weather, and threats to their unique ecosystems. SERA recognizes their vulnerability and their immense potential to contribute to the global space community. The partnership with MSRO exemplifies SERA's commitment to empowering SIDS with space-based solutions.
From monitoring to mitigation to adaptation, space technology is a powerful arsenal in the fight against climate change for SIDS nations. Applications include:
Satellite Surveillance: Earth-observing satellites act as a 24/7 watchtower, tracking sea levels, weather patterns, and environmental changes. This critical data helps SIDS anticipate and respond to climate threats.
Early Warning, Swift Action: When storms brew, space-based early warning systems give SIDS the precious time they need to prepare and protect their communities.
Building a Resilient Future: High-resolution satellite imagery is being used to help SIDS map vulnerabilities and plan for a climate-resilient future. This involves smarter infrastructure, sustainable development, and thriving ecosystems.
Staying Connected: In times of crisis, communication is key. Telecommunications satellites ensure that even the most isolated islands can stay connected and coordinate relief efforts.

SERA is committed to amplifying their voices and supporting their aspirations. From offering a SIDS representative a seat on our next Mission to collaborating on research and development, the organization is building a more inclusive and equitable spacefaring future.
SERA believes that space exploration and environmental protection are two sides of the same coin. The partnership with MSRO and sponsorship of SINC are just the beginning. In addition to helping SERA coordinate other SIDS nations’ participation in the upcoming New Shepard Mission, MSRO will be designing a science experiment that will explore solutions to an urgent environmental problem the Maldives is facing. SERA remains dedicated to working with SIDS and the global community to leverage the power of space for a more sustainable and resilient planet.
